Development program of Moscow hotel industry
Development of tourist industry in any region is directly related to the range and quality of accommodation services offered. At that, Moscow has not been developing as a tourist region; although, in 1960s-80s the number of tourists who visited the capital city within the frameworks of tourist exchange organized by official state institutions reached 10 million per year including 5 million foreign tourists.
At the same time, Moscow, as the capital city and the biggest megapolis of the Russian Federation, possesses a unique cultural and historical heritage and plays a key role in political and economic life of modern Russia. That is why, it could be regarded as the largest all-Russia centre of business and cultural tourism which could successfully compete with the other European capitals in the world tourist market.
Therefore, one of the main strategic objectives of the city development determined by Moscow Government is the transformation of the City of Moscow into a large European business, financial, cultural and tourist centre.
To achieve this goal, the fast development of the tourist industry in Moscow is planned, including:
- large-scale construction of new hotels and reconstruction of the existing ones that were built in the 1950s-60s.
- creation of a modern tourist infrastructure, which could be enough to render services to the increasing number of visitors of the capital city.
It is expected, that the total number of visitors (both from Russia and from abroad) coming to the capital city each year will have increased up to 20 million by the year 2020. The above mentioned figures are included into the Master Plan of the Development of the City of Moscow till the Year 2020, on the basis of which Moscow Government has approved the General Scheme of Hotels Location in the City of Moscow till the Year 2010 (Resolution of Moscow Government dated April 24th, 2007, No. 323-PP). The General Scheme presupposes creation of proper conditions for construction of new accommodation facilities and reconstruction of the existing ones, and includes more than 350 projects with 118 000 accommodation places.
According to the monitoring data as of the end of 2007, there are 206 hotels in Moscow offering about 70 000 accommodation places.
According to the Master Plan of the Development of the City of Moscow, the number of the accommodation places in the facilities will have been 3 times higher by the year 2010, as compared to current figures.
Preference will be given to construction and reconstruction of two-and three-star hotels, which will have comprised 67% of all the accommodation facilities by the year 2010.
During the period from the year 2001 through 2007, 37 hotels offering more than 7000 accommodation places have been opened in Moscow. 20 hotels with 6 to 7 thousand accommodation places will be commissioned within the next two-year period.
International hotel operators are being actively involved into the hotel business management.
During the period from 2004 through 2007, some large and important hotels managed by the international operators have been opened in Moscow. These are: a five-star de luxe hotel "Ritz Carlton Moscow" in Tverskaya Street, a five-star hotel "Suisshotel" on Krasniye Kholmy, 4-star hotels "Cortyard Mariott" in Voznesenskiy Pereulok, "Holiday Inn" in Lesnaya Street, "Holiday Inn Suschevskaya" "Holiday Inn Sokolniki", "Corona Intourist" (Mes Maisons) in Pokrovka Street, "Borodino" in Rousakovskaya Street.
